The Ultimate Hub at Twin Arrows Casino and Resort
As you depart Flagstaff, Arizona, a spectacular discovery awaits. Nestled within the picturesque embrace of the San Francisco Peaks Mountain Range, the Twin Arrows Casino and Resort hosted this extraordinary event. Whether you sought the comforts of plush rooms or preferred to camp in the RV haven of the parking lot, Twin Arrows had you covered. Impeccable rooms, culinary delights, and unparalleled hospitality were par for the course.
However, the true star of the show was the awe-inspiring network of trails that beckoned. Offering panoramic vistas of the high desert, where small trees and shrubs gently yielded to towering pines, these trails were nothing short of off-roading nirvana. After conquering these exhilarating routes, you could return to the resort, indulge in a sumptuous meal, and perhaps even try your luck at the casino. Remarkably, many of us broke even, as if the universe conspired to keep the excitement flowing.
Thrilling Night Rides
Friday night saw the festival come alive with registration from 4pm to 6pm, followed by an electrifying 30-plus-mile night ride. Whips and lights illuminated the darkness, creating an enchanting spectacle that set the tone for the entire weekend. It was an electrifying night of adventure as we embarked on an unforgettable journey from Twin Arrows Casino at the stroke of 7pm. Our convoy of SXS vehicles illuminated the darkness with a spectacular array of lights, setting the stage for a night to remember.
Our off-road escapade traversed a 30-mile loop through the enchanting high desert, promising a diverse range of terrains and challenges that would keep us on our toes. We kicked things off on a flat, graded road, but the real excitement was yet to come. The trail soon twisted and turned, leading us into tight, thrilling off-road paths that would test our skills to the limit.
As we ventured deeper into the night, the heavens decided to join the party, blessing us with a gentle rain that added an extra layer of excitement to the journey. The raindrops danced on our helmets and windshields, making every twist and turn an exhilarating experience.
Amidst the darkness and the rain, we stumbled upon a mysterious collection of old cabins in the heart of nowhere, adding an eerie and enchanting element to our adventure. Despite the weather, everyone was in high spirits, relishing the thrill of the ride and the camaraderie of the group. And the best part? There was no pesky dust to obscure our view, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the night’s magic.
Our pulse-pounding adventure culminated as we made our triumphant return to the Twin Arrows Casino around 10pm, leaving us with just enough time to try our luck at the gaming tables. The night ride not only thrilled our senses but also provided the perfect prelude to a night of entertainment and chance. This is where the desert comes alive under the cover of darkness, and every twist and turn is an exhilarating surprise. Your lodging awaits your return, but the memories of this epic night ride will stay with you forever.
Valleys, Vistas and Trail Adventures
Come Saturday morning one of the trail rides led us to the Cinder Hill area, named for its volcanic origins dating back to 1040-1100. A magnet for off-road aficionados, Cinder Hill boasted colossal hills, volcanic craters, and majestic trees. The enigmatic “Hundred-Dollar Hill” alluded to the off-roading challenges that could indeed cost you a pretty penny.
Yet, the winding trails on the soft dirt, winding through the trees, proved nothing short of breathtaking. The Cinder Hills Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area, located near Flagstaff, Arizona, is a haven for off-road enthusiasts seeking thrilling adventures in an otherworldly landscape. This OHV area is known for its exciting trails, stunning volcanic terrain, and breathtaking vistas.
The Volcanic terrain and scenic overlooks in the Cinder Hills OHV Area are absolutely exhilarating. The Cinder Hills OHV Area sits within the San Francisco Volcanic Field, and its trails wind through ancient lava flows, cinder cones, and volcanic craters. This unique landscape provides a surreal backdrop for off-roading and the viewpoints are unbeatable. Many trails in the Cinder Hills OHV Area lead to stunning panoramic viewpoints. From these vantage points, you can take in breathtaking vistas of the surrounding Coconino National Forest and the San Francisco Peaks, including Arizona’s highest peak, Humphreys Peak.
Aside from Cinder Hills captivating beauty, the trail variety is incredible for newbies or seasoned veterans. Whether you’re looking for easy, scenic rides or challenging, technical terrain, Cinder Hills has something for everyone. For riders seeking an adrenaline rush and a test of their skills, Cinder Hills features challenging technical sections with rocks, steep climbs, descents, and tight turns. These sections can be a playground for experienced off-roaders. Families with young riders will also find trails that are suitable for beginners, making it a great destination for a family off-road adventure.
The Cinder Hills Off-Highway Vehicle Area in Flagstaff, Arizona, truly offers an exhilarating off-road experience in a visually stunning and geologically fascinating environment. Whether you’re a novice looking for scenic exploration or an experienced rider seeking technical challenges, this OHV area has something to offer every off-road enthusiast. Just remember to respect the land, follow safety guidelines, and leave no trace to ensure that this remarkable terrain remains enjoyable for future generations. One of the sponsors, AJE Powersports, generously treated all of the riders to a trailside lunch, complete with fantastic food, thrilling raffles, and swag bags galore.
The second ride led us to the enchanting Mormon Lake, a perennial favorite among seasoned riders. Located just 29 miles southeast of Flagstaff, this natural lake—often dry—offered a breathtaking spectacle at an elevation of 7,000 feet amid towering ponderosa pines. The lodge, country store, and charming cabins transported participants back to the Old West. Saturday’s ride brought an unexpected twist—a refreshing bout of rain and an abundance of mud. It was a mud-slinging, slip-and-slide adventure that had our UTVs wear the badge of honor in the form of a generous coating of mud.
The off-road terrain around Mormon Lake, Arizona, is characterized by the lush Coconino National Forest, known for its dense pine forests and diverse landscapes. When exploring this area, you’ll encounter a variety of off-road terrains that showcase the natural beauty of the region. As a rider, the Pine Forest Trails are awe-inspiring. Riding through these dense forests provides a serene and picturesque experience. The trails wind through tall pine trees, creating a canopy of shade, especially during the warmer months.
Many of the forest roads in the area are gravel or dirt, making them ideal for off-road adventures. These roads can vary in condition, from well-maintained to rugged, providing different levels of challenge for riders. Rocky sections can be tricky, but they are also exhilarating, particularly in areas where volcanic rock formations are prevalent. These rocky areas can add an element of technical challenge to your off-road ride.
From creeks and streams to meadows and clearings, the nature while riding along these trails is mind-blowingly stunning. The Coconino National Forest is crisscrossed by numerous creeks and streams. Riding alongside or through these waterways can be an exciting experience, but it’s essential to exercise caution, especially during rainy seasons when water levels can rise. Between the dense pine forests, you’ll come across open meadows and clearings. These areas provide a change of scenery and often serve as great spots to take a break, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the natural surroundings.
What is thrilling is that the changes in elevation allow you to view unbelievable scenic overlooks and maybe even spot some wildlife. The terrain around Mormon Lake includes elevation changes, with trails that ascend and descend. This variation in topography offers different perspectives and vistas as you explore the area.
Some trails in the area lead to scenic viewpoints where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscapes, including the beautiful Mormon Lake itself, while the Coconino National Forest is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, elk, birds, and more. Keep an eye out for opportunities to spot these creatures as you ride through the forest.
