…With GBC’s Tow-Master SS Radial Trailer Tires
Story & Photos By: Angela McCorison
I seem to have a love-hate relationship with tires—I love having new tires, but I hate having to go through the process of finding them. The fact is, when you have 31 tires in your “fleet” of road vehicles and trailers, it can be overwhelming at times. I am happy to say though that GBC Motorsports and their brands such as Greenball have loads of great tire options for trailers, trucks, UTVs, and more, making them a fantastic option.
In this case, the item in need of new rubber was my flatbed utility trailer. Before purchasing this trailer, my uncle owned it. He used it occasionally to tow his sports car, but also as a machine shop general-use trailer. He was also open to letting people such as me borrow the trailer, so even though it had some wear & tear, it made sense to buy it when the time came. When I acquire a new vehicle or trailer, I make an effort to review its overall condition, noting the “priority” fixes down to the “maybe one day” fixes. Considering it had a tire blowout the last time the trailer was used, it had no spare. I was a little concerned because tires are of the utmost importance as they help get you and your toy to your destination, so while this trailer still isn’t the prettiest, it now has nice new tires.
I chose the Greenball Tow-Master SS because they are a radial trailer tire designed for performance and reliability even in high heat conditions. The high heat ability is a bonus trait for me because I’m constantly driving the trailer through very hot California and Arizona desert temps. When temps hit 110°, I don’t even want to know how hot the black asphalt roads are under the blazin’ desert sun. I can’t forget to mention that keeping your tires cooler is an important factor in helping prevent the tire from exploding. Another great thing about the Tow-Master SS is the wide range of sizing options for 13” to 16” wheels, plus different size tires have different load rating options. Our trailer had ST205/75R15 tires on it, so we stuck with that size since it is recommended. The Tow-Master SS has two load options for their ST205/75R15 tires, load range C or D. I typically tow a UTV, but also occasionally tow a 4Runner on this trailer, so I wanted the load range D which boasts 2,150 pounds for max carrying capacity compared to the load range C at 1,820 pounds. When you jump up to the ST225/75R15 size tires, you have even greater load ranges, which boast a 2,830 carrying capacity for the E, or 3,150 respectively for the F. As you probably know, it is important to purchase a tire with the appropriate maximum carrying weight and load rating or your tires won’t last.
The Tow-Master SS tires have a low rolling resistance adding increased efficiency and a re-engineered inner liner for improved air retention—of which I tested out on accident by apparently running over a drywall screw(see pic). While on a road trip that took us from California to Arizona, through Utah and finally to Idaho, we pulled over in Utah to find a place to eat, but instead found a screw lodged into the passenger-side trailer tire. I know what you’re thinking, “yeah, you had a flat tire.” Nope, no flat. Since the tire was still fully inflated, we decided to leave the screw alone until we got to our destination in Idaho. Believe it or not, we got to Idaho Dunes with the tire still inflated as if it was never punctured.
I mentioned that we would drive these tires through high desert temps and we have. We have driven off-road many times. We also managed an attempt to impale a tire and even drove through down-pouring rain with flash flooding in central UT whilst having said screw in the tire, and at no point during any of this did we pull over due to a tire issue. Not bad Greenball, not bad at all.
Overall, the Tow-Master SS is priced well, provides a stable and a smooth towing experience, and has proven now thousands of miles later to be quite a reliable and durable tire. I look forward to many more trips with these tires on my trailer and now have the perfect option for my boat trailer in need of glorious new shoes. Look to Greenball for your future tire needs for your Trailer, UTV/ATV tires, Truck tires and so much more.
