Whether you look at your daily driver or your UTV, everything has a weak point. It can be a part that commonly fails before others, or a wear item that needs service regularly and constant attention. For the vast majority of UTVs, that weak point is the belt. There are a lot of advantages to the belt driven CVT transmissions, but all of those perks go out the window when the belt breaks on the trail, and you are elbow deep in scorching hot clutches making sure to pull out every last strand of what once was a drive belt.
Since the inception of the belt driven UTV, the aftermarket has tried to solve this problem with different compounds, layers, and styles of belts. Some were successful and some were not, causing damage to the clutch sheaves which ultimately would be much more costly than a simple belt change. The engineers at Trinity Racing decided it was time to solve this issue once and for all, and this effort resulted in the Trinity Racing Sand Storm Drive Belt. No stranger to finding weak links, Trinity Racing has been solving these types of issues for 41 years in the off-road industry.
We slapped this fresh new rubber from Trinity Racing on our adventure ready 2018 Polaris RZR XP 4 Turbo and have tried our best to break it, but still it survives. At the core of the Sand Storm is the ultra strong Aramid fiber cord that can withstand the heavy tensions applied in high load applications, while the lower cogs are precision machined to fit the sheaves perfectly enabling smooth engagement. That smooth engagement also helps to keep temperatures down, adding above average life expectancy to the belt.
Having put over 800 grueling hard miles on our heavy RZR XP 4 Turbo, we often pull the clutch cover to blow out the clutches and inspect the belt between rides. The Sand Storm belt shows little to no signs of wear, while the sheaves still look brand new. Other belts have not held up to even 500 miles of punishment, so surviving to 800 and beyond says a lot for the time that Trinity Racing put into the development of this belt. We’re looking forward to 800 more trail miles ahead!
