A mixture of light and dark gray clouds raced across Johnson Valley, CA as a recent storm of wind and rain kept temps in the low 60s. UTVs made their way to the start line one-by-one throughout the entire day. A top ten run in qualifying puts you out front with the fast guys, making it through the big obstacles unscathed, instead of getting caught up in the inevitable traffic jams. The top 25 spots ended up being the who’s who of UTV Racing, all heavy hitters with a shot of winning. Mitch Guthrie Sr., 6 time King, ended up 21st but has the experience to beat his boy Mitch Guthrie Jr., 2 time King himself, who starts in the 10th spot. New to the Polaris RZR family, Casey Currie and his freshly built RZR Pro XP landed in 20th spot, not bad for little to no seat time in the new car. Jason Sherer, Shannon Campbell, Phil Blurton, The Miller Brothers and many more are lined up nuts to butts and ready to chase down the top cars. The 1.4 mile qualifying course was simple yet complex if you deviated from the correct line. With many mistakes made throughout the day, the lead pack made it look easy. Ronnie Anderson impressed a lot of people with his 3rd place qualifying effort falling behind Nathan Wolff by less than a second. The former Crimson Tide baseball player Jay Shaw would have a flawless 1:40.140 run and will lead the way when the green flag drops on Thursday.
