Aftermarket accessories are inevitable on anyone’s ride. It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when. And when that snowball starts to roll, it starts to roll pretty fast and gets pretty big. After spending a lot of time in the industry both as enthusiasts and professionals, we have learned this time and time again it’s all part of what makes this fun. Some of the time, it’s not as simple as just bolting stuff on though. Upgrading the exhaust system is a very common swap, adding a more aggressive tone makes the experience much more visceral, and gives the illusion of making more power.
The downfall is that the manufacturers have the engine’s control system so finely tuned that the simple gain or loss of backpressure from adding an aftermarket exhaust makes the engine no longer properly tuned. Hacking into the factory computer seems scary and cumbersome, but much like most automotive plug and play programmers it’s as easy as operating a smartphone, and DynoJet has figured out how to do this for the powersports market. We reached out to them to get a Power Vision 3 for our 2019 Honda Talon 1000R. Our Talon has a Trinity Exhaust installed and they recommended the Power Vision 3, but us being us, we wanted to see what the exhaust would do on its own.
The sound was great, but the seat of our pants horsepower meter discovered no change. The Talon’s computer also needed to be told about the new increase in exhaust flow to then adjust the fuel delivery accordingly. After plugging the DynoJet Power Vision 3 into the Talon’s diagnostic port, the menus were very simple to navigate and flashing the new tune into the ECU was very easy. Between the exhaust and the tuner, we now had the seat of the pants gains we were looking for. The exhaust was great on it’s own, but needed the DynoJet to live up to its full potential.
DynoJet sends the Power Vision with a base tune that is specified by their engineers and tested both on a dyno and in the field. But for those, who are like us that can’t leave well enough alone, they also give you the software to install on your PC. This software allows you to pull up the fuel maps, fine tuning it to your exact needs. This is something I would not recommend doing unless you have some experience tuning or are technically savvy. If you do find yourself in the pursuit of perfection, make small changes to make sure you are going in the right direction. This makes the Power Vision 3 invaluable for those that want to upgrade their engine in phases. Everytime you add something new, simply plug in and refine the tune.
Now that our Talon is running in tip top form, there will come a time where a diagnostic code will need to be read. The 1000s of brutal miles we put on these cars is bound to break something. DynoJet gives us the ability to simply scan the vehicle for codes that will display on the screen of the Power Vision 3. This will help quickly identify the problem, get it fixed and get back in the dirt.
Loaded with more features that we are excited to play with, the Power Vision 3 is a tool that should be in all UTV’s. Even if you aren’t looking for maximum power, the other options make it well worth the investment. The easy to use menu system takes all the frustration and complexity out of getting the job done. And who doesn’t like adding that seat of your pants power?
